Creators have to pay $8 per month to Twitter for a chance to get a share of the advertising revenue.

Twitter is promising to share advertising revenue with creators, which means the company could theoretically pay you for your popular tweets.

But there's a catch: The revenue will be shared only if you first join Twitter Blue, the company's $8-per-month membership program.

Company owner Elon Musk introduced the new policy on Friday. "Starting today, Twitter will share ad revenue with creators for the ads that appear in their reply threads," he tweeted. But he quickly added: "To be eligible, the account must be a member of Twitter Blue Verified."

In other words, you must first pay the company at least $8 per month in order to receive some share of the advertising revenue. And even then the earnings may be small.

Revenue will come not from ads that appear on the main Twitter feed, but from ads that pop up in reply threads (opens in a new window) on creator tweets. Therefore, a creator will only see revenue from users who click on their viral tweet to check replies.

Kasturi didn't mention how much a producer can expect from ad revenue. So it's also unclear what it will take to turn a profit from ad-sharing after paying for a Twitter Blue subscription.

Still, the plan suggests Musk is trying to think of ways to push users to Twitter Blue, which he hopes will drive revenue into the company. Back in December, Musk said that Twitter was in the midst of a financial crisis that caused him to lay off more than half its workforce and slash operating costs.

In addition, many advertisers have stopped spending on the social media platform, which could raise doubts about whether Twitter can meaningfully share revenue with creators.

Meanwhile, Musk is hinting that ad-sharing could attract more creators to Twitter. “More to come on this front. Twitter should be where a creator is most rewarded for their time and talent,” he wrote in a tweet (opens in new window).

Back in November, Musk also indicated (opens in a new window) that he wanted to offer Twitter better terms for sharing ad revenue with creators who post videos.
