An Unexpectedly Funny and Stylish Adventure
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" presents a new animated origin story for the adventurous turtles, filled with unexpected humor and a stylish crepuscular design. Directed by Jeff Rowe, known for co-creating "The Mitchells vs. the Machines," and co-written by Rowe, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, alongside Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit.
The story takes us back 15 years to when Dr. Stockman (voiced by Giancarlo Esposito), a lonely and tormented scientist, went rogue and created a group of bizarre mutant embryos in an underground lab. Chaos ensued when his sinister corporate minders attempted to bring him in, leading to the escape of four baby turtles. A greeny-glowing phial of the gooey gloop, responsible for creating mutants, accidentally fell into the New York drain, infecting the baby turtles being looked after by Splinter, a fugitive fighting rat (voiced by Jackie Chan), who taught them martial arts.
The Teenage Mutant Turtles Emerge
These four baby turtles, Donatello (Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), Raphael (Brady Noon), and Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), grew up into teenage mutant turtles yearning for adventures in the above-ground world. Alongside the reluctant support of high-schooler and aspiring journalist April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), they confront Stockman’s now fully adult mutant monster Superfly (Ice Cube). Nevertheless, their quasi-dad Splinter consistently warns them about the possibility of being captured and exploited by humans.
A Confrontation of Humans and Mutants
The film delves into an X-Men style debate, questioning the potential for reconciliation between humans and mutants. The turtles embark on a crime-fighting mission to save the very humans who remain skeptical and ungrateful towards them. The journey is amiable and enjoyable, but one quibble lies in the fact that the writers, including Rowe and Rogen, focus more on pop culture gags rather than exploring the deeper humanist mystery behind the turtles' names. Nonetheless, the abundance of humor and funny material keeps the audience engaged throughout.
Future Adventures and Release Dates
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" promises to reinvigorate the franchise, attracting both nostalgic adults and young fans alike. The film is set to release on 31st July in the UK, 2nd August in the US, and 7th September in Australia.
A Nostalgic Blend of Teenage Rebellion and Martial Arts Action
Early in the film, the teenage turtles ditch their grocery-shopping errand to attend an outdoor screening of the classic comedy "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off," perfectly capturing their rebellious and fun-loving spirit. This new spin on the beloved characters brings a refreshing and entertaining perspective to their teenage years, making "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" a must-watch for fans of all ages. With the involvement of talents like Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the film ensures a rowdy good time that will leave the audience craving more adventures from the heroes in a half-shell.
